FAQs

  • Semaglutide is an injectable medication used initially for managing type 2 diabetes, that is found to have the remarkable and unexpected side effects of significant weight loss. They belong to a class of drugs known as GLP-1 receptor agonists. These medications mimic the action of a hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), which increases insulin secretion, decreases glucagon release, and slows gastric emptying. This combination helps lower blood sugar levels after meals and promotes fullness, which can contribute to reduced food intake. But the real mechanisms underlying their extraordinary effectiveness in weight loss lie in their effects within the brain. Semaglutide acts on areas of the brain, including parts of the hypothalamus that regulate hunger, fullness, and cravings to turn off hunger signaling to a degree, which results in a state of negative energy balance that helps the majority of patients lose weight.

  • Semaglutide is a compounded prescription medication that, when combined with diet and exercise, helps adults with weight management. It is a type of medication called a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonist, which mimics the hormone GLP-1 that the body naturally produces. Semaglutide works by:

    • Lowering blood sugar levels after meals.

    • Regulating blood sugar by stimulating glucose-dependent insulin secretion.

    • Slowing the release of sugar into your blood, so your body burns more fat.

    • Delaying stomach emptying, leaving you feeling fuller longer and limiting overall calorie consumption.

  • While every individual responds differently to medications, a medical study of 1961 participants demonstrated that in a 68-week period, participants lost an average body weight of ~15%. Furthermore, 1 out of 3 participants lost more than 20% of their body weight.

  • Despite GLP-1 medications being a good weight loss tool for many people, it's not for everyone. Certain people shouldn't take it, including:

    • Pregnant or breastfeeding women

    • People with a history of pancreatitis

    • People with Type-1 diabetes

    • People with an allergy to Semaglutide (or any of its ingredients)

    • People with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2

    • Individuals with a history of thyroid cancer

Always consult a medical professional before taking GLP-1 medications. Be open and honest about any pre-existing conditions and allergies so your provider can ensure it's a good fit before beginning treatment. Note that the FDA does not approve or monitor compounded medications for safety or efficacy.
